A gas cylinder explosion near Agip motel in Kisenyi in Mbarara city has claimed the lives of two people and critically injured three others.
Samson Kasasiira, the Rwizi Region Police Spokesperson, says that they are yet to establish the identities of the deceased.
He identifies those of the injured as Gashom Kamusiime and John Tumwebaze who are admitted at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital for treatment.
Bright Shaba Kyama, a scrap dealer, says that several people who were around during the explosion survived with minor injuries.
He identifies the deceased as Baker and Hussein.
In a brief statement, Kasasiira says that the explosion occurred at a metal scrap shop where the victims were trying to cut the gas cylinder.
He explains detectives from Mbarara Central Police Station have cordoned off the scene to gather more evidence.
Police have also transferred the deceased’s bodies to Mbarara Referral Hospital for postmortem.
The Mbarara City Resident City Commissioner has confirmed the incident saying the explosion resulted from cutting a gas cylinder.

Mwesigye who heads the City Security appealed to the people of Mbarara mainly scrap dealers to be more vigilant in transacting the business stressing that some metals are liable to explosion once recklessly handled.
