James Maddison and Curtis Jones have been cut from England’s Euro 2024 squad, talkSPORT understands.
Gareth Southgate has informed Maddison and Jones they will not be making the final 26-man squad, with Crystal Palace youngster Adam Wharton’s hopes of being on the plane raised.
England boss Southgate is also expected to leave out Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford and Jones’ Liverpool teammate Jarell Quansah.
That would leave three more outfield players to be cut ahead of Friday’s deadline.
Palace starlet Wharton had been among those expected to be left out but after a bright debut against Bosnia-Herzegovina, could well force his way in.
The 20-year-old only joined Palace five months ago, in an £18m deal, from Blackburn.
But he has made a big impression in the Premier League and was this week nominated for the European Golden Boy award.
Maddison will be hugely disappointed at failing to make the cut.
He came off the bench in the 3-0 win over Bosnia-Herzegovina, winning his seventh cap.
Jones, Quansah and Trafford, meanwhile, were all unused substitutes, while Palace’s debutant Wharton caught the eye with a short cameo.
Maddison was in the England squad for the 2022 World Cup but did not make an appearance as the Three Lions exited at the quarter-final stage.
A £40m signing from Leicester last summer, Maddison started off brightly in his first season at Spurs as he scored three goals and assisted another five in his opening 11 Premier League matches.
But his progress was halted in their 4-1 defeat to Chelsea in November when he came off with an ankle injury, keeping him out of action for three months.
Maddison returned to action at the end of January but struggled to regain consistent form before the end of the season.
He will have watch the Euros at home this summer amid stiff competition in the attacking midfield role.
Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden and Cole Palmer have all enjoyed stunning seasons for their respective clubs.
The trio are likely to all be named in the final squad given their quality and versatility.
England face one final test against Iceland on Friday at Wembley, live on talkSPORT, before they kick-off their Euros campaign against Serbia on Sunday June 16.
