Traffic Police have said a total of 236 drivers were arrested during the festive season for violating traffic guidelines while on the road.
Giving a status report of the festive season, Traffic Police spokesperson, Superintendent of Police, Michael Kananura said the 236 were arrested between December, 23 and today, 30.
According to the traffic police spokesperson, unlike other years, the number of accidents were relatively low on Ugandan roads during the Christmas period, attributing this to sensitization and operations.
Kananura for example cited the enforcement to driver badges and route charts which ensured they limited drivers making unnecessary return journeys.
He explained that most accidents are caused by fatigued drivers making return journeys, adding that by enforcing route charts, this was prevented.
Meanwhile, about 2,900 venues have been cleared by police for fireworks display during celebrations to usher in the new year.
The 2,900 is an increase from the 2,000 cleared previously to usher in the year 2024.
Police spokesperson, Kituuma Rusoke said the 2,900 will have to adhere to strict guidelines set and failure will attract severe punishments.
