Two councillors have died in a car accident in Ntungamo district. The councillors identified as Pius Tusimire Nuwagaba and Monic Rutabingwa Kutamba died on spot after the car they were travelling in overturned on Monday evening at about 4pm.
Pius Tusimire Nuwagaba was the local LC V councilor for Nyarutuuntu subcounty and member of finance committee. Monic Rutabingwa Kutamba is the lady councillor for LC v for Ngoma sub county and secretary for works all in Ntungamo district.
The councillors were travelling in a Toyota Wish Reg. No. UBH 873G which rammed into a Box Body No. UBD 660V belonging to Nile Agro industries.
According to eye witnesses, Nuwagaba, who was driving the Wish, was at high speed in the heavy evening downpour when he realised the Box Body vehicle was ahead. He tried to brake, lost control and the Wish overturned, killing the two occupants. The car further rammed into the Box Body in the opposite lane which was coming from Rubaare, headed towards Ntungamo.
The death of the two councillors has thrown Ntungamo leadership into confusion and shock as they were critical members in the administration.
Sam Mucunguzi, the Ntungamo district chairman while speaking to Nile post noted that “We are traumatized by this accident and subsequent death of Hon Pius and Hon Monic, they have been so transparent and served their people diligently since May 2021.”
The bodies of the deceased have been taken to Itojo district hospital for postmortem.
Details of burial arrangements will be shared later.
The councillors’ death is the latest high profile accident to occur in the area. In July, prominent businessman Apollo Nyegamehe died in a night car accident in the same area.
