After the Ministry of Health instructed medical interns to resume their internships last month, Kabale Regional Referral Hospital has swiftly boarded a total of 41 medical interns.
Dr. Nyeko John Philbert, the Director of Kabale Regional Referral Hospital, revealed that these interns will contribute their expertise to the hospital over the course of one year, supporting the work of other medical professionals within the facility.
Dr. Nyeko made this announcement while addressing journalists at the hospital premises at Kabale Regional Referral Hospital.
Dr. Nyeko disclosed that a total of 41 medical interns had reported for duty across various departments of the hospital. Among them are 5 intern pharmacists, 16 intern nurses, and 20 intern doctors.Dr. Nyeko revealed that each intern would receive an allowance of one million shillings per month being financial support intended to help them cover their basic needs during the internship period.
It should be remembered that the pre-interns had been on strike since the previous year, primarily due to concerns over their pay. Meanwhile, the interns were advocating for an increase in their monthly stipend to Ugx 2.5 million in line with a directive from President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
