Speaker of Parliament Anita Among has urged religious leaders to pray for the 11th Parliament following the death of Dokolo Woman MP Cecilia Ogwal, the fourth legislator to pass away in just two and a half years.
Speaking at a funeral church service at All Saints’ Cathedral Nakasero, Among, who served as chief mourner, also eulogised Ogwal as a senior politician who inspired many young women to enter politics at both local and national levels.
Ogwal’s death followed those of former Speaker Jacob Oulanyah, Serere MP Patrick Okabe, and former State Minister for Labour Rtd. Col Charles Engola. This string of losses prompted Among’s plea for divine protection for the remaining members of Parliament.
Beyond her parliamentary service, Ms Ogwal was praised as a mentor and role model. Dr. Miria Matembe, the former State Minister for Ethics, lauded her as one who embodied the Ugandan motto of “For God and My Country,” excelling both in family and national life.
Ms Ogwal’s husband, Lamech Ogwal, spoke of her devotion as a wife and mother, extending her care beyond her biological children to hundreds of others, including fellow MPs. Her children, too, remembered her dedication to public service, regardless of political affiliations.
The service, led by Bishops Onesmus Asiimwe and Alfred Olwa, encouraged attendees to emulate Ms Ogwal’s faith and service.
