Five Traders Feared Dead in Amuria Accident

At least five traders are feared dead in Amuria following a road accident this morning. The traders were on their way to Obalanga Cattle Market in Kapelebyong district when the truck registration number UAU 429R lost control and plunged into Alereke Bridge, located between Abia and Asamuk sub counties in Amuria district.

Stella Agudo, one of the surviving traders says the accident occurred around 6:00am along Soroti- Amuria Road. She told our reporter at the scene that the affected traders were buried by the produce bags that filled the vehicle.

According to Agudo, five of her colleagues died on the spot after drowning in the water under the bridge while three others were critically injured. Agudo says that there were about 20 occupants in the vehicle including the driver and the turn-man.

The East Kyoga Regional Police Commander, Damalie Nachuha, who was at the scene with the team of police officers said that they will give a comprehensive statement about the accident after evacuating causalities and the truck that was plunged into the water.

The causalities and bodies of the deceased traders have been taken to Amuria General Hospital while those in critical condition have been transferred to Soroti Regional Referral Hospital. 

This is the third accident in Amuria district where trucks going to the markets overturn and claim lives of the several traders. In 2022, another accident claimed 13 traders from Bugisu sub region who were traveling to Adipala cattle market.
